Good morning/afternoon, Teacher, and to the peers of whom are listening to this...

I believe in this particular topic that i have been assigned based on the allegation that reading books are better than watching TV, that the overall idea of this is a debatable topic. In my opinion I do agree with this, that reading a book is better than watching tv, but like a far amount of people in the world, I don't find the idea of sitting down in isolation from the rest of the world, and reading fictional things that someone else has put on a page in order to make a profit, a fun and motivating thing to do. I do believe though that by reading books, in quite large amounts, you will become a faster reader. something that I do wish I was, as when it comes to tests it takes a while to read the question, evidently resulting with loss of time.

TV can be a very social thing. Families sit down at night and watch Tv together, they sometimes eat meals while watching Tv, when friends and friends come over you will generally at some point watch Tv together. Tv also teaches us things sub-consciously, as well as consciously. They have documentaries, they have parodies of books and other educational things, which can include the basic information but in a more humorous way, and this will then in some cases unknowingly stick into your brain better, as it will be recorded as a funny memory rather than a boring education memory. I remember when i was in year seven, and I was in Christian Studies, and the teacher asked the class, what an 'epiphany' was, and I answered
"A sudden realization of great truth"
And my teacher thought i had got it from a dictionary, but as i corrected him by telling him that it was actually a quote from the Simpsons movie!

In conclusion I believe that Books are theoretically better than Tv as they will help you through life, by mind automatically adapting to being able to quick read, and you will also pick up vocab, and become a better speller, better at grammar, and better at creating stories.

Aristotle's 3 modes of persuasion: Pathos, Logos, Ethos

  1. Define the following in a new blog post: Aristotle's 3 modes of persuasion: Pathos, Logos, Ethos

    -  Pathos is a style of persuasion that evokes feelings to in-power the audience of the speaker.

    -  Subjective
    -
Experience that may happen from the result of doing something
    -  sense of lose of logic, it can be used to much and emotions run wild

  2. -   Logos is a style of persuasion that gives the impression of intelligence in the speaker, and gives the impression of preparation for the speakers speech
    -  Logic
    -
    factual information
    -   academic
     situations, political, business
    -
    Objective - absence of emotion

    -   Ethos is a Style of persuasion that can be seen as an appeal to honesty from the speaker to their audience. It is how well the speaker convinces their audience that they are qualified to speak on this specific topic.

    -  Speaker - Credibility - the speakers own experiance

  3. Choose a speech and try to figure out which of the three is the predominant type of persuasion. Do this by first describing what the speaker is trying to persuade of their audience.

    -   I believe that the speech "Any Given Sunday" uses 'pathos' to evoke emotion and encourage the audience to succeed.

Speech to the Troops at Tilbury

My loving people,
We have been persuaded by some that are careful of our safety, to take heed how we commit our selves to armed multitudes, for fear of treachery; but I assure you I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people. (Sense of connection with her people) (They should not surrender) Let tyrants fear, I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good-will of my subjects; and therefore I am come amongst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live and die amongst you all; to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom, and my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust. (She's not afraid to die with her people, also phyisical presence shows her support and commitment to cause) I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, (physical weak, mentally and internally strong and committed) and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm; to which rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field. (appreciates efforts of soldiers) I know already, for your forwardness you have deserved rewards and crowns; and We do assure you in the word of a prince, they shall be duly paid you. In the mean time, my lieutenant general2 shall be in my stead, than whom never prince commanded a more noble or worthy subject; not doubting but by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and your valour in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over those enemies of my God, of my kingdom, and of my people.

1. How does Queen Elizabeth talk about herself in this speech? (use quotes in your answer)

  • She described herself as if she is just important as the troops that are in front of her listening to her speech
" I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good-will of my subjects"

2. Why do you think this is an effective way to refer to herself?
  • I think this is effective, as by her telling her troops that they were as imptortant as her, she let them know that they were there to do a job, and there country was relying on them as there country relies on there queen

Inserting Yourself in a Speech - 'Any Given Sunday'

“ANY GIVEN SUNDAY”

I don't know what to say really.
Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives
all comes down to today.
Either
we heal
as a team
or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
believe me
and
we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us
or
we can fight our way
back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money
believe it or not.
I chased off anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean, one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch.
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our fingernails for that inch.
Cause we know,
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the fucking difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

1. How does Al Pacino's character talk about himself in his speech?

  • Al Pacino's character talks about himself in his speech, from the speech "Any Given Sunday" in a few ways. Firstly throughout his speech, he includes himself as part of his team. Instead of just saying, 'this is your chance' he says, 'this is our chance',

"We heal, as a team, or we are going to crumble. Inch by inch play by play till we're finished. We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me and we can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of hell. One inch, at a time."

Ak Paino's Character also includes parts of his life, and adds his wisdom into the speech, hoping to inject his life into there brain, so that they don't take the same paths he did.

"I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make. I uh.... I pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who has ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror."

2. What effect does this have on the speech? (Use Quotes in your answer).

  • His honesty gains his teams trust, because of his humbleness he is able to talk about himself in a negative manner, inspiring people to be different, to make there coach proud.

2009 Naplan Writing Prompt

Discovery
“Good morniinnngg sunnyvile, today’s weather, fine and…”

Another day had begun, Tim’s radio alarm went off, and he was awake. He was awake and looking forward to the day ahead. It was the 3rd day of his summer holidays. 3rd day out of another 53 days to come of freedom. Although for the next 3 weeks he was to be traveling around Europe. His plane left in five hours, and he was so excited he had been packing for the past 3 weeks. He was flying solo for the first time, and although he had been flying everywhere with his family for the past fourteen years of his life, there was something about the thought of just flying by yourself, that is just thrilling.

Tim jumped out from his top bunk of his bunk bed that he was sleeping in and landed on the ground with a good solid thud. He looked around his bedroom knowing that this would be the last time he would see it for the next 3 weeks. He saw on his desk directly across from his bed, a compass, a gold exploration compass. The light from the little crack between where the curtains met, shown down onto and shined of leaving a gold light on the roof of his room. Tim walked over to take a closer look. As he picked it up he noticed the note underneath it. Once Tim had finished marvelling the stunning beauty of this amazing compass, he picked up the note that had been lying underneath it. It was address to Tim, as he unfolded it, he quickly looked down the bottom of the note to see whom it was from. But it didn’t say.  Written on this piece of paper said, “Tim, I hope that this compass brings as much adventure, as it did for me. I know you will respect it, and take care of it, and I wanted to pass this down to you.” Tim now knew who it was from. It was from his grandfather. He was an amazing man. He was the first man to climb mount Everest, he had sailed to Antarctica, he had travelled the world. Tim always wanted to be like his grandfather, and now that he had just recently passed away, he now strived to be more like him.

Tim ran downstairs and didn't mention a word about what he had just been given, but by the look on his mums face, he knew that she had left it there for him, as she knew it was a big day for him. He quickly rushed through his breakfast, and did the finishing touches of his packing. It was now time to head to the airport. Tims family lived reasonably close to the airport, as they did fly alot. and it was only a 15 minute drive until they arrived there. It was the longest fifteen minutes of Tims life, and he new that the 10 hour plane trip would be even longer.

To be completed...
