Highlight where the following persuasive techniques are used:

  • repetition
  • alliteration
  • extended metaphor

Answer the following questions using quotes where applicable:

  • What extended metaphor is used in this speech? Is this metaphor positive or negative towards women? Explain.

    The extended metaphor is; " Make all the money thou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt an erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not too hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou shalt enjoy her; therefore make money. A pox of drowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek thou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than to be drowned and go without her." it is negative towards women as it is stating that he should get rid of the other man and take her as his prize, refering to woman as a prize/object rather than a person.
  • How does the metaphor related to Rodrigo becoming more proactive in his pursuit of Desdemona?

    The metaphor becomes more proactive as it makes him see that his feelings for her are stronger than he first thought, as a result pushing him to fight more for her.
  • How does Othello characterise Othello ('the moor')?

    The moor is characterized by Othello  as a untrustworthy and weak coward
  • How does Iago describe Rodrigo being passive? What will he do to himself if he doesn't act?

    Lago describes Rodrigo as being passive as he is just standing idly by while Othello takes Desdemona. He will drown himself if he doesn't act

IAGO
It is merely a lust of the blood and a permission of
the will. Come, be a man. Drown thyself! drown
cats and blind puppies. I have professed me thy
friend and I confess me knit to thy deserving with
cables of perdurable toughness; I could never
better stead thee than now. Put money in thy
purse
; follow thou the wars; defeat thy favour with
an usurped beard; I say, put money in thy purse. It
cannot be that Desdemona should long continue her
love to the Moor,-- put money in thy purse,--nor he
his to her: it was a violent commencement, and thou
shalt see an answerable sequestration:--put but
money in thy purse
. These Moors are changeable in
their wills: fill thy purse with money:--the food
that to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be
to him shortly as bitter as coloquintida. She must
change for youth: when she is sated with his body,
she will find the error of her choice: she must
have change, she must: therefore put money in thy
purse
. If thou wilt needs damn thyself, do it a
more delicate way than drowning. Make all the money
thou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt
an erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not
too hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou
shalt enjoy her; therefore make money. A pox of
drowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek
thou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than
to be drowned and go without her.

NAPLAN Writing Prompt

It is cruel to keep animals in cages.

Over the years there have been many different topics debated among many people. Many of these have been decided upon and an agreement arranged, but one topic that has been around for along time, and that is still a reasonably heated debate is the topic of weather animals should be kept in cages. My opinion on this particular topic is what many people are pushing for, and that is that caging and imprisonment of these innocent animals whom are unwilling and have no greater justice and no voice to fight for basic rights is wrong.

Many animals and sometimes basically whole species are kept in cages for the vast majority of their lives. Birds in particular are caged their whole lives once in captivity. Their wings are clipped so they can't do the most basic instinct they have which is to fly. They have no choice, they have no voice against this, one false turn and their in the unmerciful hands of human kind. We as a race see birds as stereotypically in cages. every pet shop you walk into you hear the tweets from all directions we turn and we see ten of them in these tiny cages. They have no room to be able to spread their wings and move around freely, because they have no freedom. Caging these animals is basically imprisonment, we are imprisoning these defenseless animals as if they were criminals, as if they have done something wrong, but in all truth they have done nothing wrong, they are not vilions or criminlas, and these animals shouldn't be jailed as if they were.

Cages aren't neccaseraly what you may think they are. Many zoos keep their sea-life in fairly small tanks for the size of the animal enclosed in them. Most of the time it is for a good reason, such as recovery and healing from and injury or illness, but in a majority of places they keep their show animals in these significantly small tanks. Zoos are usually significantly better with keeping their animals than other places, and are always licensed to hold these animals as some other places are even registered. Zoos have many animals in cages which isn't good, but the way they store there larger animals is usually vastly better than the way they store their frogs, crocodiles, birds ect. In places like Melbourne they have zoos which keep their animals in wide open habitats which are basically fence-less. Places like these fence-less zoos are setting a good example on the rest of the world, and more places should be taking the same protocols to let their animals have some sense of freedom.

In conclusion I believe that animals shouldn't be held in cages. To many pets and wildlife are caged in for the majority of their lives, with their basic instincts and rights literary torn away from them. These animals have done nothing wrong, they should not be treated as another victim of our species justice system and kept as prisoners for our own amusement. All animals like us should have their own right to be free, and to live their lives how they want. It's wrong to imprison animals.

The Merchant of Venice: Act IV sc i - Portia PORTIA

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;

And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

Summary: In this scene Portia is pleading to Shylock for the life of Antonio. Antonio is responsible for the debt that Bassanio owes Shylock. Bassanio is Portia's partner and needed money to be with Portia. When Bassanio borrowed the money the punishment for failure to pay back the money on time was 'a pound of flesh' which would cause certain death. Bassanio didn't pay the debt back in time and now Shylock wants his 'pound of flesh' from Antonio. Portia is trying to get Shylock to change his mind and see the virtue of being merciful.

Find and highlight these techniques in the speech:
metaphor
alliteration
repetition

Answer the following questions using quotes where applicable:
How does Portia describe mercy? How important and powerful is it?

-   Portia describes mercy like a drop of rain form heaven, that mercy is easy and nice and that it is mighty.

What can one achieve through mercy? One can achieve justice through mercy.
How is religion part of this speech? (You need to do some thinking on this one.)

-   Religion is apart of this speech in the way that he refers everything to God and heaven and says that mercy is what God would want, because he states that the rain is from heaven.

Reflection Statement

Reflection Statement
For this assignment I chose to decide upon my own persuasive topic. I chose the topic of, ‘Should cigarettes be made an illegal substance. For this particular statement I chose to be on the positive side of this argument, arguing that cigarettes should be mad illegal.
Throughout my speech I used a varied amount of persuasive techniques. I used repetition, starting my argument with the line “Smoking kills” and concluding my argument with “smoking kills”. Also an example of repetition used in my speech is of the phrase “It’s not enough”.
Yet all this is not enough. It’s not enough to stop the addiction of smoking. It’s not enough statistically to dis-courage people from taking up this awful habit.”
My argument also contains ‘rhetorical questions’, questions that I ask to the audience that don’t require an answer, they are there to help bring you into my argument. An example of this is
Do you think that this should be happening? What about if this was one of your family members?
I also used statistical evidence to back up parts of my argument. “It is still averaged that over 5.4 million deaths are caused by smoking related illnesses.
I aslo used reasoning as to why I think that you should follow my argument.
if we don’t do something about this now, more and more people are going to become addicted to these cigarettes because this drug is so accepted in this world, and then people are going to ask themselves “why not?”
My argument contained constancy, and I have made very clear my beliefs and my statement towards this particular topic, by repeating the general statement of,
“If smoking was made illegal then…”
giving my audience
To present a persuasive speech, you have to feel and act passionately about the topic that you are discussing. I plan to present my argument in an enthusiastic manner, trying to invoke my audience into believing my side of the argument. I want to deliver my argument to the audience with as much self-belief as possible, as having trust in yourself and what you are presenting will make an impression on the audience. I plan on my making my first impression really count, as first impressions are what make, or break a persuasive speech. If I lose the audience from the beginning then it’s very hard to get them back. As according to the assessment outline we are not able to use visuals to capture the audience, you need to keep them invigorated with what you are saying, adding in things that relate to them, I intend to do this in my speech and really try and involve the audience as much as possible.

Smoking: Should cigarettes be made illegal?

Smoking kills. I would like to take this brief space of your day to talk to you about something that to me is needed in this world, and that is that cigarettes should be made an illegal substance.

In our modern day world, we see many different campaigns to stop smoking. There are the Tv advertisements, the very graphic pictures on the back of the cigarette packets that we come across over the counter in stores, and that we see in the streets, there are banners, and many more. Yet all this is not enough. It’s not enough to stop the addiction of smoking. It’s not enough statistically to dis-courage people from taking up this awful addiction. Even though we have these advertisements to prevent people from taking up smoking, it is still averaged that over 5.4 million deaths are caused by smoking related illnesses.

I believe that if cigarettes were made illegal it would decrease this incredible number by amazing amount. At the moment, one reason that is strongly preventing cigarettes from becoming illegal is because of the massive amounts of money the government get payed from the Tabaco companies taxes. The government receives billions of dollars from these tobacco companies every year, and if they were to make cigarettes contraband then they would be losing all this revenue. If this wasn’t the case I would think that you would have a right mind to say that cigarettes would be illegal at this point in time.

Cigarettes have been around for a long time. They have been dated back to the early 9th century, but it really started to become a social drug in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was actually advertised that it was good for you to smoke, and people believed this. In the early 1950’s they had Tv advertisements suggesting to the audience that you should smoke a brand of cigarettes named “Camel”. They showed images and told you that this particular brand was the number one brand picked by doctors across America, giving the impression that if doctors are smoking it then it must be good for you. All this false advertising lead to widespread addiction of cigarettes, and many cigarette brands urged you to try their brand for 30 days, but in which tine you would then be addicted.
Due to many people becoming addicted to these cigarettes in their early life, it has led to them having, in most cases, severe health problems, and because of this addiction at an early age, and these health problems, it has resulted in many people losing their friends and loved ones at a reasonably young age. I for one have lost my Grandfather to a smoking addiction. He started smoking when he was young at the time when it was believed to be healthy, and then as time went by and the real effects of smoking were made public, he was still heavily addicted, smoking more than one to two packs a day.  Even though many doctors advised to stop, his addiction was too strong to overcome, and the cigarettes were too easy access, so he found it hard to give up, resulting in the loss of his life at an early age of 65. Do you think that this should be happening? What about if this was one of your family members? I believe that the illegalisation of cigarettes would have, and will stop this from happening.
Smoking is addictive but together we can help the people whom are addicted by encouraging them through this, helping them with everything they need, to help them fight the addiction to nicotine. If cigarettes were made an illegal substance than I believe that the majority of smokers would find it too difficult to find cigarettes and as a result turn to one of the many nicotine soothers that are on the market, and overtime they're addiction will be cured.
Smoking is the one of the most common deadly drugs across the world, and if it wasn't for the income that the government receives from these top tobacco companies, then I believe that it would already be illegalised. These addictions tear apart families, and if we don’t do something about this now, more and more people are going to become addicted to these cigarettes because this drug is so accepted in this world, and then people are going to ask themselves “why not?”
Smoking kills. Thanks for listening.
