Reflection Statement

Reflection Statement
For this assignment I chose to decide upon my own persuasive topic. I chose the topic of, ‘Should cigarettes be made an illegal substance. For this particular statement I chose to be on the positive side of this argument, arguing that cigarettes should be mad illegal.
Throughout my speech I used a varied amount of persuasive techniques. I used repetition, starting my argument with the line “Smoking kills” and concluding my argument with “smoking kills”. Also an example of repetition used in my speech is of the phrase “It’s not enough”.
Yet all this is not enough. It’s not enough to stop the addiction of smoking. It’s not enough statistically to dis-courage people from taking up this awful habit.”
My argument also contains ‘rhetorical questions’, questions that I ask to the audience that don’t require an answer, they are there to help bring you into my argument. An example of this is
Do you think that this should be happening? What about if this was one of your family members?
I also used statistical evidence to back up parts of my argument. “It is still averaged that over 5.4 million deaths are caused by smoking related illnesses.
I aslo used reasoning as to why I think that you should follow my argument.
if we don’t do something about this now, more and more people are going to become addicted to these cigarettes because this drug is so accepted in this world, and then people are going to ask themselves “why not?”
My argument contained constancy, and I have made very clear my beliefs and my statement towards this particular topic, by repeating the general statement of,
“If smoking was made illegal then…”

To present a persuasive speech, you have to feel and act passionately about the topic that you are discussing. I plan to present my argument in an enthusiastic manner, trying to invoke my audience into believing my side of the argument. I want to deliver my argument to the audience with as much self-belief as possible, as having trust in yourself and what you are presenting will make an impression on the audience. I plan on my making my first impression really count, as first impressions are what make, or break a persuasive speech. If I lose the audience from the beginning then it’s very hard to get them back. As according to the assessment outline we are not able to use visuals to capture the audience, you need to keep them invigorated with what you are saying, adding in things that relate to them, I intend to do this in my speech and really try and involve the audience as much as possible.

Smoking: Should cigarettes be made illegal?

Smoking kills. I would like to take this brief space of your day to talk to you about something that to me is needed in this world, and that is that cigarettes should be made an illegal substance.

In our modern day world, we see many different campaigns to stop smoking. There are the Tv advertisements, the very graphic pictures on the back of the cigarette packets that we come across over the counter in stores, and that we see in the streets, there are banners, and many more. Yet all this is not enough. It’s not enough to stop the addiction of smoking. It’s not enough statistically to dis-courage people from taking up this awful addiction. Even though we have these advertisements to prevent people from taking up smoking, it is still averaged that over 5.4 million deaths are caused by smoking related illnesses.

I believe that if cigarettes were made illegal it would decrease this incredible number by amazing amount. At the moment, one reason that is strongly preventing cigarettes from becoming illegal is because of the massive amounts of money the government get payed from the Tabaco companies taxes. The government receives billions of dollars from these tobacco companies every year, and if they were to make cigarettes contraband then they would be losing all this revenue. If this wasn’t the case I would think that you would have a right mind to say that cigarettes would be illegal at this point in time.

Cigarettes have been around for a long time. They have been dated back to the early 9th century, but it really started to become a social drug in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was actually advertised that it was good for you to smoke, and people believed this. In the early 1950’s they had Tv advertisements suggesting to the audience that you should smoke a brand of cigarettes named “Camel”. They showed images and told you that this particular brand was the number one brand picked by doctors across America, giving the impression that if doctors are smoking it then it must be good for you. All this false advertising lead to widespread addiction of cigarettes, and many cigarette brands urged you to try their brand for 30 days, but in which tine you would then be addicted.
Due to many people becoming addicted to these cigarettes in their early life, it has led to them having, in most cases, severe health problems, and because of this addiction at an early age, and these health problems, it has resulted in many people losing their friends and loved ones at a reasonably young age. I for one have lost my Grandfather to a smoking addiction. He started smoking when he was young at the time when it was believed to be healthy, and then as time went by and the real effects of smoking were made public, he was still heavily addicted, smoking more than one to two packs a day.  Even though many doctors advised to stop, his addiction was too strong to overcome, and the cigarettes were too easy access, so he found it hard to give up, resulting in the loss of his life at an early age of 65. Do you think that this should be happening? What about if this was one of your family members? I believe that the illegalisation of cigarettes would have, and will stop this from happening.
Smoking is addictive but together we can help the people whom are addicted by encouraging them through this, helping them with everything they need, to help them fight the addiction to nicotine. If cigarettes were made an illegal substance than I believe that the majority of smokers would find it too difficult to find cigarettes and as a result turn to one of the many nicotine soothers that are on the market, and overtime they're addiction will be cured. 
Smoking is the one of the most common deadly drugs across the world, and if it wasn't for the income that the government receives from these top tobacco companies, then I believe that it would already be illegalised. These addictions tear apart families, and if we don’t do something about this now, more and more people are going to become addicted to these cigarettes because this drug is so accepted in this world, and then people are going to ask themselves “why not?”

3 idea topics for assessment speech

  1. Stem Cell Research: Benefits outweigh Ethics?

    Stem cell research is a brand new scientific idea were "using the epiblast tissue of the inner cell mass (ICM) of a blastocyst or earlier morula stage embryos. A blastocyst is an early stage embryo—approximately four to five days old in humans". Which basically means that they take a certain cell from the fertilized egg, which is around about 4 or 5 days old, which in turn kills the embryo. These stem cells can then be 'told' to become any living tissue in the body, which means someone missing a leg, or arm could grow it back through stem cell research. This is a very controversial topic, as to add meaning and help someone living, they have to kill a possible person. I believe that in the case as that it is going to help people to have better lives, that in return 'killing' a possible person isn't such a bad thing. This embryo that may turn into a human being hasn't really even started living, no fears, no knowledge, no memories, no emotions, in my opinion as it is a possible human being, i don't think it should be classified as 'killing', as 'Life' is defined by many sources, as 'the act of living, through actions and interactions of a human being' and i don't believe that these organisms can be defined as humans, in such we are using the material from another animal or organism to help the living present.
  2. Asylum-seekers: Should they be allowed in to Australia just because of the problems accouring in there own countries?

    In recent years many asylum-seekers have come to our countries shores seeking refuge from the poverty infested, or war bidding countries. These asylum seekers have traveled thousands of kilometers in cruddy little wooden boats filled with way over what would be believed to be a reasonable persons limit. Recently it has been released in 'The Australian' that nearly every asylum-seeker who's arrived in Australian waters during the past three years was granted refugee status, according to figures released under Freedom of Information laws. In my honest opinion i believe that these people no matter how far they've come or how far they've come, or how bad the situation is in there country, they should not just be aloud into Australia. They should have to apply for citizen ship, and go through all the same things that the people whom have come to this country legally have had to do.

    Today smoking kills thousands of people a year. It is an incedible burden to live with and once you start it's hard to stop. In my opinion I believe that all smoking should be made illegal. There is no benifit that comes from smoking, it is an incredibly bad drug, and should be made illegal like all the others. The government are using the taxes from all these tabaco and ciggerete companies, and this is the only reason why it is not an illegal substance at this moment. If the government were seosable, they would ban Cigeretes and make the people in there country safer and healthier.

Nature of Task:


Persuasive texts are designed to position a point of view. (opinion - thesis)


Texts that successfully persuade are usually highly emotive (emotional words & influence the listener/audience emotions) and effectively balance opinions with facts. (Research - logos)


Persuasive texts can make sweeping generalizations (uniformed conclusion), rely on stereotypes and hyperbole and yet still seem credible.


This is because a combination of objective (facts) and subjective (opinion) information is usually used to persuade.


Careful use of repetition and high modality words (persuasion techniques) can emphatically convey the composer’s purpose if it is counterbalanced with the use of statistics, expert evidence and product/idea endorsement from authoritative sources. (objective facts)


Moreover, effective incorporation of anecdotes (personal story), analogies (Comparison) and inclusive language (we, us, ours -include the audience) can personalise the message and help connect the composer and their text with its audience.

CAS speech

Four score years ago, in the year of 1928, Mr N MacNeil, Headmaster of Knox, made the association to the CAS which was established by Mr Archer, Headmaster of Trinity Grammar School. Since that day men of knox have trained, they have fought, and they have won for the glory of our school. We as a nation, a nation of men of knox grammar! owe it to these athletes to do a simple deed, a simple deed that is not much to ask of,  a simple deed, that acquires nothing from you but a minuscule portion of your day, a simple deed, that is a proud tradition of our school, and this simple deed is to attend this upcoming CAS, and shout your heart out for these men whom fight for us! our nation of knox grammar!


It would be fatal for the nation of knox to overlook the urgency of this moment. This moment in our history! These men train countless hours to fight for us, the least we can do is join them in there battle, support them, and cheer them on, as they fight to win what is rightfully ours! Too many years have we tasted the bitterness of defeat, too many years have we gone jumping for gold, but then falling on our faces. These warriors have been trained to do their best, but without our support, they will miss the jump... We as a community, as a family, as a nation, must do everything we can to help these athletes, these warriors, these fellow men of knox, make that jump and grab gold! Just a simple attendance makes all the difference! We should not stand idle as these men who are fighting for us swim their hearts out. You may not be able to swim along side these athletes, but we owe it to them to attend their war, and join them in there quest for glory.

CAS is a tradition that should be upheld, and your attendance means a lot to our fellow men of knox swimming for us, it is an incredibly fun and thrilling night, and if every man here attends this years CAS swimming, then I know that our nations athletes will do the best they can to strive for success in this everlasting war against our rival schools.

In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."
But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

Good morning/afternoon members of the audience. I would like to take a brief moment from your lives to talk to you about something that in my mind is unjust. 
In this modern day world we live in, natural disasters happen daily right across the globe, lives are lost and destroyed, homes become rubbles of rock. Millions of dollars are lost in all this destruction, and people go for months, sometimes years, without a house or belongings to call their own. This is happening right now in the recently earthquake hit town of Christchurch in New Zealand. 
Although on the other side of the world, New York are just cleaning up after this years 'New York Fashion week'. This is a nine day week full of extremely unhealthily skinny woman, dressed up in clothes that famous designers create for these 'models' to were once while they walk up and down a 'catwalk'. Each of these outfits cost hundreds of dollars to both design, and to make, and the only time they are ever worn is during these fashion shows, as they are too stupid and impractical to were anywhere else, that's not to mention the price that these dresses go for after being seen at Fashion Week. 


All this money that is being spent on these unnecessary 'fashion' weeks should be in my opinion spent on helping to rebuild the lives and homes of the less fortunate in these aftermath zones of natural disasters. These millions of dollars being wasted on cloths, advertising, sponsorships, the models salary of over $200 a show for just walking up and down a line on the floor a few times, plus around $50 for preparation time, and many other things should be spent refurbishing homes and rebuilding peoples lives! All these things come at a cost, and unfortunately these costs are being spent on things that are not needed.
