English speech
Smoking: Should cigarettes be made illegal to sell and have possession of?
Smoking, it kills. I would like to take this brief space of your day to talk to you about something that to me is needed in this world, and that is that cigarettes should be made an illegal substance.
In our modern day world, we see many different campaigns to stop smoking. There are the Tv advertisement, the very graphic pictures on the back of the cigarette packets that we come across over the counter in stores, and that we see in the streets, there are banners, and many more. Yet although these may sometimes work for people whom have an idea of smoking, but are not yet addicted, but they very rarely work for those people who are already smoking. Even though we have these advertisements to prevent people from taking up smoking, it is still averaged that over 5.4 million deaths are caused by smoking related illnesses.
I believe that if cigarettes were made illegal it would decrease this incredible number by amazing amount. At the moment, a reason that is strongly preventing cigarettes from becoming illegal is because of the massive amounts of money the government get payed from the Tabaco companies taxes. The government receives billions of dollars from these tobacco companies every year, and if they were to make cigarettes contraband then they would be losing all this revenue. If this wasn’t the case I would think that you would have a right mind to say that cigarettes would be illegal at this point in time.
Cigarettes have been around for a long time. They have been dated back to the early 9th century, but it really started to become a social drug in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was actually believed to be good for you to smoke, and people believed this. In the early 1950’s they had Tv advertisements suggesting to the audience that you should smoke a brand of cigarettes named “Camel”. They showed images and told you that this particular brand was the number one brand picked by doctors across America, giving the impression that if doctors are smoking it then it must be good for you. All this false advertising lead to widespread addiction of cigarettes, and many cigarette brands urged you to try their brand for 30 days in which tine you would then be addicted.
Due to many people becoming addicted to these cigarettes in their early life, it has led to them having, in most cases, severe health problems, and because of this addiction at an early age, and these health problems as a result lead to many people losing their friends and loved ones at a reasonably young age. I for one have lost my Grandfather to a smoking addiction. He started smoking when he was young as in the time when it was believed to be healthy, and then as time went by and the real effects of smoking were made public, he was still heavily addicted, smoking more than a pack a day.
Smoking is addictive but together we can help the people whom are addicted by encouraging them through this, helping them with everything they need, to help them fight the addiction to nicotine. If cigarettes were made an illegal substance than I believe that the majority of smokers would find it too difficult to find cigarettes and as a result turn to one of the many nicotine spotters that are on the market, and overtime they're addiction will be cured.
Smoking is the one of the most common deadly drugs across the world, and if it wasn't for the income that the government recorded from these top tobacco companies, then I believe that it would already be illegalised. smoking tears apart families, and smoking kills.
thanks for listening.
